Remy Creations: A Style All Her Own

Meet Remy Stressenger, the creative force behind Remy Creations, a brand that blends coastal charm with effortless style. With roots in both Nantucket and Boston, Remy has turned her passion for design into a thriving business that captures the essence of New England living. From her iconic SHARK sweaters to chic destination pieces, her collections radiate joy, individuality, and an undeniable connection to the sea.

We sat down with Remy to chat about her journey, her inspirations, and the adventures that shape her brand. With an approach that’s as dynamic as her personality, Remy Creations is redefining what it means to live and create in coastal New England.

First things first—how did you decide on the name Remy Creations?

“Initially, I was going to use my daughter’s first and middle name because I loved how it sounded,” Remy explains. “But then someone said, ‘What about your name? It’s pretty cool.’ Et voilà!”

It’s a fitting choice for a brand that’s as personal as it is creative, where every piece reflects Remy’s unique style and vision.

What inspired you to start your own business?

“I had been designing a shawl when I suddenly came across a shop space on Nantucket that was available. I jumped at the opportunity, signed the lease, and then scrambled to decide what I was going to fill it with!” she says with a laugh.

For Remy, it was a leap of faith that has paid off beautifully, as she’s turned her ideas into a vibrant brand that resonates with her customers.

How would you describe your style or aesthetic?

“My style is always changing based on my fashion inspirations, moods, and what I’m working on,” Remy says. “But if I had to pick one, it’s a great pair of jeans, a button-down shirt, a belt, and boots or white sneakers. Comfortable and chic!”

Her approach to style mirrors her brand—classic yet ever-evolving, with a focus on pieces that feel fresh and timeless.

Who or what has inspired your career in this field?

“Ralph Lauren, Greta Monahan, Veronica Beard, Victoria Beckham, Dudley Stephens, and Meredith Hanson have all inspired me in different ways,” Remy says. “They each bring something unique to the table that fuels my creativity.”

Her diverse influences speak to her passion for design and her admiration for those who build their brands with intention and style.

What is the greatest reward of running your own business?

“Honestly, it’s having control over my time—though that’s also the biggest challenge!” Remy admits. “But my favorite part is seeing my kids proud of what I do. That means everything.”

And the biggest challenge?

“Being mostly a one-woman show,” she says. “Finding the right help to change that has been nearly impossible. But I keep pushing forward!”

What’s inspiring you creatively right now?

“Painting, new fabrics I can’t wait to create with, and new sweater ideas,” Remy shares. Her creative energy is fueled by exploration, whether she’s experimenting in her studio or sketching fresh designs for her collections.

How have the sites and scenes of New England influenced your brand?

“What started as a fun idea—my SHARK sweaters—has become a big part of my business,” Remy says. “Now we’ve added destination sweaters like ACK for Nantucket. When people visit my stores and say they feel bright, happy, and different, that’s a reflection of New England’s beaches, water, and seasonal colors. My stores always have a beachy feel, year-round.”

The Shark Sweaters That Started It All

One of the most iconic pieces in the Remy Creations collection is the SHARK sweater—a design that began as a fun idea and quickly became a cornerstone of the brand. “What started as something I thought would be funny has turned into a large portion of my overall business,” Remy shares. Featuring bold, playful designs that capture the spirit of Nantucket and coastal living, the SHARK sweaters are beloved by locals and visitors alike.

Their success even inspired the launch of destination sweaters, starting with ACK for Nantucket, blending timeless style with a touch of hometown pride. “When people step into my stores and say they feel bright, happy, and different, that’s exactly the vibe I want my designs to have,” she explains. The SHARK sweaters—and their cheerful energy—embody the playful, beachy spirit that defines Remy Creations.

Spotlight on Remy’s Two Store Locations

With roots in both Nantucket and Boston, Remy Creations brings coastal charm to two iconic New England destinations. Each location reflects Remy’s passion for creating vibrant, welcoming spaces that mirror the spirit of her designs.

  • Nantucket: Nestled on the island that inspired so much of her work, the Nantucket shop is where it all began. Bright, beachy, and full of personality, this store captures the essence of seaside living and is the perfect place to shop for Remy’s iconic sweaters and other unique creations.
  • Boston: Located in the heart of Beacon Hill, the Boston shop blends coastal vibes with the timeless elegance of the city. From destination sweaters to one-of-a-kind pieces, this boutique showcases Remy’s ability to bring a touch of Nantucket to the city.

Each shop offers a little slice of New England charm, making them destinations for locals and visitors alike.

What’s your New England or Coastal Happy Place?

“Any beach I can drive onto with my fishing rod,” Remy says. “There’s nothing better than watching the sunset, feeling like there’s no one else around—except maybe my husband, kids, or friends.”

Describe your perfect day there.

“Pack a cooler with the best snacks, bring fishing rods, and stay on the beach until dark. Light a bonfire, wait for the Milky Way to appear, and definitely catch some fish!”

Bringing Coastal Joy to Life

Remy Stressenger’s journey is a celebration of creativity, coastal living, and the power of taking chances. From her iconic SHARK sweaters to her dreamy beach days, Remy Creations is a reflection of her passion for style and the beauty of New England.

BOI Report 101: What Creative Entrepreneurs Need to Know

Editor’s Note: A recent federal court decision has issued an injunction, meaning businesses are currently not required to file the BOI Report. While this requirement is temporarily on hold, it’s crucial to stay informed, as this may change in the future. To learn more about what this means and how to prepare, listen to our latest podcast episode featuring creative attorney Angie Avard Turner.

What is the BOI Report, and What Does It Mean for Creatives?

If you’re a creative entrepreneur, you may have heard whispers about something called the BOI Report. Let’s break it down in simple terms and, most importantly, what it means for you and your business. This isn’t just legal jargon—it’s about keeping your creative business running smoothly and legally compliant.

So, What Exactly Is the BOI Report?

The BOI Report, short for Beneficial Ownership Information Report, is a requirement under the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA). Essentially, the government wants to know who owns and controls U.S. businesses to prevent shady activities like money laundering or fraud. Think of it as transparency in action, but it comes with paperwork!

Does This Apply to Me?

Here’s the scoop: if you’re a sole proprietor or a general partnership, you’re off the hook. But if you’ve structured your creative business as a corporation or LLC, you likely need to file a BOI Report—unless you qualify for an exemption (e.g., nonprofits or certain larger companies).

Important Note: If you operate more than one legal entity—say, two LLCs—you’ll need to file a separate BOI Report for each. Some people are missing this detail, but it’s critical to avoid compliance issues.

And for those of us running small but mighty creative businesses, this is probably something we’ll need to handle.

What Information Do They Want?

For each beneficial owner (translation: anyone who owns or controls the company), you’ll need to share:

  • Full legal name
  • Date of birth
  • Residential address
  • A unique ID number (like a driver’s license or passport)

If your business was formed on or after January 1, 2024, you’ll also need to include information about company applicants—the person(s) who filed the formation documents.

Deadlines to Keep in Mind

  • If your business was formed before January 1, 2024: File your first BOI Report by January 1, 2025.
  • For businesses formed on or after January 1, 2024: You have 90 days from the date your business is officially created to file.

What Should You Do Next?

If this feels overwhelming, don’t worry—you’re not alone. Here’s a game plan:

  1. Figure Out If It Applies to You. If you’re unsure, start with your business structure. Sole proprietorships and partnerships? No need to file. LLCs or corporations? Probably yes.

  2. Gather the Details. Make a checklist of the information you’ll need for yourself and any other owners or applicants.

  3. File On Time. Reports must be submitted through FinCEN’s online portal, so don’t procrastinate. This isn’t the kind of thing you want to miss—penalties for non-compliance can include fines and, yikes, even criminal charges.

Need Help?

If you’re scratching your head or feel a little out of your depth, don’t worry—we’ve got you covered. Reach out to Angie Avard Turner, a seasoned creative attorney who knows this world inside and out. Angie is a trusted member of our NECC community and a frequent speaker at our events. Coastal Whimsy with Clara Clough

Meet Clara Clough, the creative heart behind Clara Clough Art, a brand that celebrates the charm of New England with every pastel-hued brushstroke. Based in Cape Cod, Clara’s work spans ski-scapes, towering nutcrackers, and even five-foot-long wooden whale cutouts, blending timeless coastal inspiration with her unique, playful style. Her pieces reflect a deep love for art, a passion that’s been with her since childhood, and her endless fascination with the beauty of her surroundings.

Clara’s journey into the world of art is as colorful as her creations. From early days at art camps to an unexpected epiphany during a tech internship, her path has been anything but ordinary. Let’s dive into her story and learn how Clara brings her vision to life, one joyful creation at a time.

First things first—where did the business/brand name come from? What was the inspiration for choosing it?

“I went with my name because I like the alliteration of the C, and I don’t know many other people with either my first or last name!” Clara shares with a laugh. Using her name keeps her brand personal and unique—just like her art.

What inspired you to start your own business?

“I’ve always loved art and finding ways to express myself creatively, but it wasn’t until I interned at a tech startup that I realized I was in the wrong world. That experience made me apply to art school and pursue what I really wanted. I started my Instagram account to connect with other artists, but it ended up becoming my main sales platform!” For Clara, what began as a simple outlet quickly grew into something much bigger.

How would you describe your style or aesthetic?

“Grandmillennial maximalist with a folksy twist,” she explains. “I love pastel colors, and my subjects range from ski-scapes to nutcrackers to wooden whales. It’s fun to explore new ideas while keeping that cohesive, whimsical vibe.”

Clara’s aesthetic is as distinctive as her story—a blend of nostalgia, experimentation, and coastal charm. It’s no wonder her art feels like a breath of fresh sea air.

How has the sites and scenes of New England influenced your brand?

“I grew up here, so New England’s beauty is a huge part of who I am,” Clara says. “The beaches, mountains, colonial architecture—it all inspires me. The seasons alone provide so much creative fuel. I couldn’t imagine living or creating anywhere else.”

Her love for her home shines through in her work, giving each piece a sense of place that resonates deeply with her audience.

What is your New England or Coastal Happy Place?

“It’s so hard to pick just one! Cape Cod is home, but I also love Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, and Stowe, Vermont. I got engaged in Edgartown and am getting married in Stowe, so they’re both extra special,” she shares.

Clara’s perfect day on the Cape involves breakfast at Amie Bakery, shopping at Melange, a long beach day, and a walk with her dog. It’s a life as vibrant and breezy as her art.

What’s inspiring you creatively right now?

“Winter and the holidays! I love everything about this time of year—skiing, Christmas, Hanukkah. It’s all so festive and joyful, and that’s the feeling I want to bring to my work. But New England’s dreary March-May stretch? That’s when inspiration is a little harder to come by!”

What’s been the greatest reward of running your own business?

“Having the freedom to pivot when something isn’t working or lean into what’s catching on. That flexibility is everything to me,” Clara says.

And the greatest challenge?

“Growth hasn’t been linear. It’s a learning curve to figure out what resonates with people—what they actually want to buy versus what I love to create. But that’s the balance of art and design. Art is for yourself; design is for others.”

Clara’s honesty about the ups and downs of her creative business makes her story relatable to anyone following their passions.

What’s your dream project or collaboration?

“I’ve had the chance to collaborate with some amazing people already—Michele from Coastal Brahmin and the team at Mélange were both dream projects. But I’d love to work with Hill House someday. A print design collaboration with them would be incredible!”

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

“Haste makes waste,” Clara says. “Taking my time has made all the difference in creating work I’m proud of. And I’ll never forget Julia Powell telling me to throw away my bad art. It was taking up space in my studio and my head. Letting go of it created room for better things to happen.”

Clara’s journey is a beautiful blend of passion, creativity, and connection. From whimsical nutcrackers to iconic New England landscapes, her work is a love letter to the life she’s built and the region she calls home.
