In the world of handcrafted soaps, Caroline Laye, founder of Atlantic Soap Co., has made a name for herself by blending the beauty of Cape Cod with the artistry of soap making. Her creations are inspired by the Atlantic Ocean, drawing from both the coastal landscapes of New England and traditional soap-making practices from around the world. Each bar is more than just a soap—it’s a tiny piece of art, filled with intention, creativity, and a love for the natural world. Today, we’re diving into her journey, from her early inspirations to the challenges of growing a small business, and what lies ahead for Atlantic Soap Co.

Ok, first things first; where does the business/brand name come from? What was the inspiration for choosing it?

Caroline shares that her love for the Atlantic Ocean runs deep. “The Atlantic Ocean makes me think of adventure and a great big world of cultures, craftspeople, travel, and possibilities. I always dreamed bigger than just being a Cape Cod brand, and I’m intrigued by soap-making techniques on both sides of the Atlantic.” This global outlook, mixed with her Cape Cod roots, led to the name Atlantic Soap Co., reflecting the adventurous spirit she wanted to infuse into her brand.

Every bar of soap contains seawater sourced directly from Woods Hole, MA, bringing a literal touch of New England into each product. Caroline’s vision was always to extend beyond just a local business, blending her love for Cape Cod with traditional techniques and modern artistry.

What inspired you to start the brand/go into business?

For Caroline, Atlantic Soap Co. began as a creative outlet during a time when she felt stagnant in her retail career. “I was feeling stuck in my retail sales job and craving a creative outlet that could be all my own. I found a magazine about soap making and got completely hooked! I love the process and the endless possibilities. From day one, I always looked at soap making as a potential business, never just a hobby.”

Her passion for soap making was immediate and powerful. What started as an interest quickly turned into a thriving business, one where Caroline could combine her love of craftsmanship, nature, and entrepreneurship into a brand with lasting appeal.

How would you describe your style or aesthetic?

Caroline’s approach to design is as thoughtful as the process itself. “I consider my soaps to be tiny works of art. I take a minimalist approach to recreating landscapes and natural elements from the coastal environment around me.”

Each bar is crafted with care, often inspired by specific scenes in New England. “Field & Sky is inspired by the salt marsh near my house on an overcast day, and Beach Rose is meant to evoke sunset in the dunes.” Her understated designs invite people to see what they choose, from wind and waves to the patterns left in the sand after the tide recedes.

Did you always have a passion for this industry?

Reflecting on her teenage years, Caroline laughs, “Well, I was definitely obsessed with The Body Shop as a teenager, so I guess I have!” Her interest in beauty and skincare goes way back, but it wasn’t until she stumbled upon soap making that she found her true passion.

Who/What has inspired your career in this field?

For Caroline, the community of female entrepreneurs has been an unexpected but welcome source of inspiration. “Since starting ASC, I have been overwhelmed by the number of female entrepreneurs that have come into my orbit. I had no idea that by starting a business solo, I would gain a vast community of like-minded women to share my journey with.”

This sense of connection and support keeps her motivated, and she continues to draw inspiration from the women she follows and interacts with, both online and in person.

What is the greatest reward of running your own business?

Caroline’s greatest joy comes from having creative control over her work. “Having complete creative control of my business has been the highlight of my professional life.” For her, the ability to bring her vision to life without limitations is a reward in itself.

What’s been the greatest challenge?

Running a business doesn’t come without its challenges, of course. “Keeping on task and limiting distractions (from life, partner, dog, shiny objects, etc.)” is a struggle many entrepreneurs can relate to. Balancing work and life while staying focused on the growth of her brand requires constant attention.

What is currently inspiring you creatively?

Recently, Caroline has been looking across the Atlantic for new ideas. “Lately I have been looking East, across the Atlantic for new soap inspiration. The soap makers of France are some of the very best in the world, and I am looking forward to experimenting with some new techniques.”

This international influence is sure to add another layer of creativity to her already unique approach to soap making.

How have the sites and scenes of New England played into your brand?

New England is at the heart of Atlantic Soap Co., and its influence is everywhere in Caroline’s work. “In so many ways! Every bar of soap contains seawater sourced from Woods Hole, so there is literally a small piece of New England in every bar.” Beyond that, many of her designs are directly inspired by the landscapes of coastal New England, from the sandy beaches to the salt marshes near her home.

What is your New England or Coastal Happy Place?

Caroline’s favorite place is close to home. “My favorite place is my home village of West Falmouth, MA.”

My Perfect Day in West Falmouth would be…

For Caroline, a perfect day is simple: “A walk down to the beach through the dunes with friends and then hanging out all day on the sand bars, watching the tide come in and out of the marsh and feeling so, so lucky.”

Do you have a Dream Project, Product, or Collaboration?

Looking ahead, Caroline dreams of expanding her manufacturing process while maintaining the high standards she’s set for her products. “I want to find the right manufacturer who can make soaps to my specifications in the French Milled (or Triple Milled) style. This would be a big change since all of my soaps until now have been handcrafted by me.”

As for dream collaborations, she has her sights set on a brand close to her heart: “I would love to work with Anthropologie. I worked there as a manager when I was first married, so it feels like coming full circle.”

Where do you see the brand in 5 years?

In the future, Caroline envisions scaling her brand without losing its core values. “I hope to outsource some of the manufacturing and sell to at least three nationwide brands. My DREAM would be to hire a CEO (would have to be the PERFECT fit) so that I could have the title of Founder/Creative Director.”

As Atlantic Soap Co. continues to grow, it’s clear that Caroline’s vision and passion will guide the brand to new heights, all while staying true to the artistry and coastal inspiration that started it all.

Celebrating 5 Years of Navy Bleu in Watch Hill: A Perfect Coastal Getaway with Friends

Navy Bleu just turned five, and what better way to celebrate than with a close-knit group of friends and influencers in one of the most beautiful coastal spots in New England? Founded by our dear friend and original NECC member, Erin Hornyak, Navy Bleu isn’t just about coastal style—it’s about building a community of women who support each other, inspire creativity, and celebrate the coastal lifestyle we all love.

We marked the occasion with an unforgettable day in Watch Hill, Rhode Island, with a stay at the gorgeous Margin Street Inn, a scenic boat ride to Mystic, and an elegant dinner at the one-and-only Ocean House. It was the kind of day that reminds you of why we all love being part of this community—full of fun, friendship, and beautiful memories.

The Charm of Margin Street Inn

We kicked off the day at the beautiful Margin Street Inn, a place that feels like it was made for celebrations like this. Nestled on the Pawcatuck River with gorgeous grounds and river docks, the Inn immediately made us feel at home. It was the perfect spot to gather and connect, setting the stage for what turned out to be a magical day.

Our group of amazing women included Megan Schinella, aka Camp by Mama, Nina Clarke, Jen Fogelson (who you might know as Preppy Francophile), Diane Rose Spier, Mary Alice Waters, Jackie Ignall, Kayla Mandeville, Navy Bleu’s PR manager Patricia Mae Olson of Piqued PR, and yours truly. It was such a joy to be surrounded by like-minded women who have been cheering on Navy Bleu from the very beginning.

Hitting the High Seas to Mystic and Red 36

After some time soaking in the beauty of the Inn, we made our way to the docks in downtown Watch Hill for a private boat ride to Mystic. There’s something about being out on the water that just feels so Navy Bleu. The views, the breeze, and that carefree coastal vibe—it was all there.

We docked in Mystic and headed straight to Red 36 for lunch. If you’ve never been, it’s a must. The waterfront views and fresh seafood are exactly what you need on a day like this. The food was delicious, and the conversations were even better. We all laughed and shared stories about how Navy Bleu has brought us together over the years, and it reminded me why I love being part of this incredible community of women.

A Fun Shopping Stop at Island Outfitters

After lunch, we headed back to Watch Hill for a little shopping in town. Our first stop – Three Islands, a local boutique that specializes in coastal-inspired fashion, home decor, and accessories, including resort wear, jewelry, and nautical-themed gifts. Justin, the owner, is actually the brother of Sarah Cooper, who owns the Margin Street Inn, so it felt like we were keeping it all in the family! They treated our guests to a choice of outfits from their store, which was such a fun and generous surprise. Everyone left with something special to remember the day by.

Touring Ocean House and Dinner: The Perfect End to the Day

The day wrapped up with an incredible experience at Ocean House, starting with a quick tour of their luxurious penthouse suite. If you haven’t seen it yet, the views and the elegance of the space are absolutely breathtaking. We were also treated to a tour of the Ocean House’s collection of works by famed artist Ludwig Bemelmans, best known for his Madeline children’s books. Bemelmans‘ playful and whimsical style captures the spirit of adventure, making his work a perfect match for the Ocean House. The hotel proudly showcases a range of his pieces, which beautifully complement the grandeur and history of the property.

Finally, we gathered for dinner at the deckside Verandah restaurant Ocean House, where we enjoyed an incredible meal filled with fresh, local flavors. We toasted to Navy Bleu and all the friendships that have blossomed over the past five years. It wasn’t just a celebration of a brand, but of the community of women that has grown around it—women supporting women, sharing ideas, and lifting each other up.

It was a day that reminded us of what makes Navy Bleu and the New England coastal community so special—great style, yes, but also the incredible friendships and support we’ve built along the way. Here’s to the next chapter for Navy Bleu and all the exciting things to come!

Setting the Perfect Community Table with Tuckernuck

There’s something about twilight in Nantucket that feels like pure magic. The salty air, the golden glow of the sunset, and the quiet hum of conversation between friends—it all came together perfectly at our recent dinner party, hosted by the incredible community champion Holly Ruth Finigan, set at the stunning Dips property. Surrounded by some of my closest NECC community friends and adorned with the most gorgeous Tuckernuck tabletop pieces, the night was one to remember.

A Night to Remember

The guest list included some truly inspiring women, each bringing their own energy and charm to the evening. Kylie McCollough, Nicole Carstensen, Jen Crellin, and Amy Doorley-Lucas from the esteemed Mott & Chace Realty team were there, as well as Carolin Walters of Cove Road Real Estate, interior designer Dana Koebbe, and, of course, yours truly! Each of us arrived ready to relax and enjoy the beauty of Nantucket, dressed in a mix of Tuckernuck’s Navy Luella Dress and pieces from the Nantucket Reds x Tuckernuck collection, perfectly embodying the coastal elegance of the night.

The Dips property, with its expansive views and welcoming atmosphere, felt like the perfect place to gather. Nestled in one of Nantucket’s most picturesque spots, the home offered a dreamy backdrop for our dinner. From its manicured grounds to the cozy nooks where we could sit and chat, every detail of the property added to the sense of community we wanted to create. As the sun set and the stars began to twinkle, it was as though the property itself was an extension of the evening’s warmth and connection.

Of course, no dinner party is complete without a thoughtfully set table. In a recent workshop I led at the BLOOM 24 Conference, we delved into the essence of crafting a unique selling proposition (USP) that sets our businesses apart from the competition. Here, I’d like to share key points and exercises from the session, offering insights and practical steps to help you refine your own USP.

In the session, I began by emphasizing the importance of understanding and articulating our unique selling proposition. A well-crafted USP not only differentiates our business from competitors but also creates an emotional connection with our customers.

Exercise 1: Next Level Thinking

The first exercise aimed to rediscover why we got into business and identify what’s holding us back from reaching the next level. Participants wrote down their initial goals, their vision for the next level, and the obstacles preventing them from getting there. This exercise helped set the stage for deeper reflection and provided a visual representation of common hurdles faced by female entrepreneurs.

The Essence of a USP

A USP answers three critical questions:

  • Why did you get into business?
  • Why are you uniquely qualified to do what you do?
  • What benefit do you bring to your customers?

These questions help clarify the core of what makes your business unique and why customers should choose you over others.

Components of a Strong USP

  • Identify Your Target Market: Know who your customers are and what they desire.
  • Observe Your Competition: Understand what your competitors are offering and identify gaps that your business can fill.
  • Benefit Sell: Focus on the benefits your product or service provides to customers.

Crafting Your USP: Practical Steps

  • Simple and Concise: Your USP should be clear and to the point, ideally in three sentences or less.
  • Avoid Fluff: Eliminate vague terms and focus on concrete benefits and differentiators.
